Week 5 Market Check: Running Backs

Everyday we will post a Market Check, which is a summary of our research on a different position for the week.

This is not the end of our advice for the week.  At the end of the week, we’ll make our picks at each position.  Some of the picks will not be discussed in the Market Check.

BULL MARKET

Players we believe will out-perform their salary for the week. These guys will give you the most bang for your buck when you are building lineups.

The Redskins backfield has turned into a full blown 3 way committee with Thompson as the clear cut third down and pass pack. In the little playing time he’s been given Thompson has impressed, the 42 yard run shown above is a sample of what he can do. The red hot Atlanta offense should have no problems establishing an early lead and give way for a Thompson dominated game in the Redskins backfield. Expect a performance similar to the week 3 where the Redskins trailed the Giants and Thompson posted 8-57-1 through the air. For his low $3,300 salary on Draftkings he’s one of my favorite “punt” options this week.

Yes, I’m hopping on the bandwagon two weeks too late, but better now than never, right? With the Falcons offense clicking on all cylinders and Freeman winning the lead back role, he is a sure fire bet to rack up points both on the ground and through the air. We know the Redskins D is sorry in the secondary, but are they as good of a run defense as everyone says they are? Opponents of the Dolphins, Rams (Benny Cunningham), Giants, Eagles don’t necessarily have a scary rushing attack. The Falcons could expose them on the ground Sunday. Our only concern centers around the return of Tevin Coleman. I don’t think he will be a major factor but would prevent another 30+ point output from Freeman, but we’d be happy with 20 right???

Put Jamaal in the same “Match-up” proof and “Game-script” proof category as only Le’veon Bell right now. Held without a score for the first time all season last week he still managed 20.5 points on DraftKings. The Chiefs play much better football at home, the Bears will be a bit sluggish on the road. Charles will get another steady diet of touches and expect a multi score day.

Make no mistake, there is no predicting what Belichick will decide to do with the Patriots offense. Dallas has an above average run D and a bad secondary, my money is on the spread/ Dion Lewis type of offense for the Patriots, at least until they build a big lead. The off week gave Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels time to invent more ways to get the talented Lewis the ball in space and he will give Cowboys fits. My only concern is Lewis missing out on early points and then Patriots turning to Blount to hammer away the victory, but Lewis’ low salary gives me the greenlight for him in cash games or tournament lineups.

BEAR MARKET

Players we don’t believe will perform up to their salaries.  We think you can find better value elsewhere.

Latavious had his toughest day as a pro last Sunday, being benched in the 4th after his 2nd turnover. And although Oakland head coach Del Rio gave Murray a vote of confidence this week, the leash on the young back is definitely shorter. In my opinion, Denver’s defense is the best in the league, and will make rushing the ball a tough job on Sunday. With Murray dropping 2 passes last week (including one for an INT) Roy Helu will get plenty of work as they try to catch up. I’m off Murray completely this week and actually may sneak Helu in a tournament lineup.

The above video is when Crowell lost the confidence of the coaches in week 3. Clearly missing the hole for a TD, these are the game changing plays you can’t afford to miss in the NFL. So the next week Duke Johnson got more PT and made the most of it (WHICH I URGED YOU TO USE HIM!!!) The most telling lack of confidence in Crow came when Duke and not Crow got the only goal line carry of the game in week 4. Expect Duke to continue to get more and more work, including the goal line job that was once Crow’s . FADDDDE

Hill has a pretty high salary this week, so when I invest I want to make sure I’m going to get the returns. My bet is Hill will struggle to run the ball on the rejuvenated Seahawks run defense, and Gio will get most the work. Hill would need 3 more goalline TD’s to make me happy on Sunday, and I don’t think it will be as easy for the Bengals to move the ball this Sunday. FADE
