Week 5 Market Check: Defense

Everyday we will post a Market Check, which is a summary of our research on a different position for the week.

This is not the end of our advice for the week.  At the end of the week, we’ll make our picks at each position.  Some of the picks will not be discussed in the Market Check.

BULL MARKET

Players we believe will out-perform their salary for the week. These guys will give you the most bang for your buck when you are building lineups.

Hats off to the Giants coaching staff, their week 4 victory over the Bills was beyond impressive. And Steve Spagnuolo deserves more recognition than what he’s getting for scheming up opponents and allowing the Giants to be one of the surprise defenses of the league. The Giants get to go back home to what will be a fired up crowd in the Meadowlands. They also welcome an offense that is on life support. Kaepernick is a walking turnover, and the offensive line cannot create for their only weapon, Carlos Hyde. The Giants are currently the top rushing defense and will have no problem shutting down Kap and the read option element. After the offense gets a lead the Giants will be able to create turnovers.

#1 Rush Defense in the NFL, could get ugly for one dimensional 49ers

Another surprise story, the Falcons are playing extremely well on both sides of the ball. On Sunday, they welcome the Redskins to the Georgia Dome. Washington’s only chance for success is gaining a lead and smashing the ball to keep the game out of Kirk Cousins hands and keep their failing secondary off the field. At home, Matt Ryan will slay the Redskins DB’s get them off to a big lead and “Pick Six” Kirk will be forced to show off the pop gun arm strength.

The Falcons are play inspired football, especially on D. The ballhawking secondary will get their hands on a few Cousins ducks.

I’d argue that Chiefs had one of the toughest schedules to start the year. Coming off back-to-back road games against two of the best offenses in the league, most are writing off this defense. But this is the perfect spot for a bounce back game to right the ship. Adam Gase has turned the Bears into the most conservative offense in the league, but after the Chiefs jump out front he will be forced to let Cutler off the leash. The Chiefs vaunted pass rush of 2014 returns and wreaks havoc on Cutler and the Bears. The Chiefs DST will most likely by my Cash Game DST this week. (I’ll update you if that changes)

The Chiefs are a different D at home. They will come out swinging vs the conservative Bears O.
BEAR MARKET

Players we don’t believe will perform up to their salaries.  We think you can find better value elsewhere.

Allowing Josh McCown and the talentless Browns offense to have career days on their home turf, it’s clear the Chargers D is in disarray. Even with Vick under center, the Steelers possess too much talent to not go off on the Chargers. Bell will have plenty of touches, and with Martavious back on the outside it will be even harder to stop Antonio Brown. On offense, Rivers will have a tough time moving the ball on the improving Steelers D that had extra time to prepare how to crack this wounded, nearly second string Oline. Turnovers will plague Chargers and they could get blown out on a national stage.

If you give up 53 to Crowell underneath, Bell may break records on MNF

Yes, they are looking like the 2014 Seahawks defense. But $4,000 is a pretty penny on DraftKings for DST, and Seattle has a short week and has to travel across country for this one. As I’ve stated before the Bengals are the most complete offense in the league and can kill you 6 different ways. At home and on a normal week, I would bet on the Seahawks have a good shot to shut them down, but I’m thinking Seattle is a bit Sluggish and the Bengals keep rolling. For the very expensive price tag, I’m investing elsewhere for DST.

Elite WR, Elite TE, Elite OL, Power Back, Scat Back……theres no way to completely shut down the Bengals offense

Beside the fact that they welcome the #1 offense in the league to Jerry world, I’m once again more worried about Weeden turnovers to really make this one ugly. The Cowboys do welcome back some much needed reinforcements with LB Rolando McClain and DE Greg Hardy off suspension. But it won’t be enough because the Cowboys will struggle to apply their patented ball control offense, and be forced to open it up with Weeden which will almost certainly set up TB and the boys for some easy scores. FADE.

Too many weapons, Brady will toy with the Cowboys defense who doesn’t fair well when they aren’t in front
